Getting Started

WildeBackyard is a wildlife observation platform that helps you document and share sightings of animals in your area while contributing to conservation efforts.

How to Report a Sighting

  1. Navigate to "Report Sighting" from the top navigation menu
  2. Select Location:
    • Click on the map to set your sighting location
    • Or use GPS to capture your current location
    • Choose saved locations for frequently visited areas
  3. Upload Media:
    • Upload up to 5 photos or videos
    • Supported formats: JPG, PNG, MP4, MOV
    • Images help with species identification
  4. Identify Species:
    • Search for the species name using the autocomplete field
    • Add multiple species if you observed more than one
  5. Privacy Settings:
    • Public - Exact location visible to everyone
    • Obscured - General area shown (protects sensitive species)
    • Private - No location data shared
  6. Additional Details:
    • Enter animal count if you saw multiple individuals
    • Add notes about behavior, habitat, or other observations
    • Select sighting type (e.g., track, scat, camera trap)

Using the Feed

  • Browse recent wildlife sightings from the community
  • Filter by species, location, or user
  • Location Filters:
    • Global - See all sightings worldwide
    • Custom Radius - Search within a specific distance from coordinates
    • ZIP Code Boundary - View sightings within a specific postal code area
    • Place Name - Find sightings near a city or landmark (with radius)
  • Like and comment on sightings
  • Help identify species in other users' posts

Sightings Map

  • Interactive map showing all public sightings
  • Filter by species to see distribution patterns
  • Click markers to view sighting details
  • Zoom in to see precise locations (where privacy allows)

Profile & Settings

  • View your sighting history
  • Manage saved locations for quick reporting
  • Update privacy preferences
  • Edit or delete your sightings

Tips for Quality Sightings

  • Take clear, well-lit photos when possible
  • Note the date and time of your observation
  • Include habitat details (forest, grassland, urban, etc.)
  • Be accurate with location - it helps scientists track species ranges
  • Use obscured privacy for rare or sensitive species
  • Add behavioral notes - they provide valuable ecological data
